Acid reflux occurs when stomach acids flow upward into the esophagus or mouth. Some symptoms of acid reflux are heartburn,  difficulty swallowing, sore throat, erosion of tooth enamel, tooth sensitivity, chipping, discoloration of teeth and bad breath. Research  has shown that acid can erode at a pH acid level of 5.5. With a pH of less than 2.0 your stomach acid can damage tooth enamel and cause tooth sensitivity. See your doctor for treatment. Your Doctor can do a variety of tests.  You can reduce the symptoms by not smoking, lose weight if over weight, do not wear tight clothing, don’t eat late at night,  avoid chocolate, spicy/greasy foods, alcohol, and coffee (all of the good stuff).

Ways to protect your teeth with acid reflux is visit us so we can examine you for any enamel erosion, use dentin-sensitive toothpaste, wait 60 minutes to brush your teeth after consuming acidic foods, dissolve baking soda in water and swish in the mouth after reflux occurs, and don’t use antacids that have a high sugar content.

We will be glad to examine your mouth for acid reflux damage.  See us at Health and Wellness Greenville NC Drs. Capps, Bowman & Padgett    252-752-1111
