Once we determined the need for a root canal (endodontic treatment) of a tooth, it is important to understand reasons to proceed. WebMD cites the following explanation: damage to a tooth’s nerve tissue or pulp causes bacteria to form and multiply within the pulp chamber. This bacteria and decayed debris can cause an infection or abscessed tooth. This may lead to swelling that may spread to other areas of the face, neck or head. Bone loss can occur around the root of the tooth, as well as drainage problems that may develop and extend from the root to other areas of the gum, cheek and skin. Remember, we sedate!!!!!!
Saving your tooth through root canal treatment involves removal of the infected pulp (nerve). The inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected and sealed. To further protect and restore the tooth, a permanent filling or crown is recommended.
